The Air Jordan 9, introduced by Nike in 1993, was the first model in the Air Jordan series to be released during Michael Jordan's break from professional basketball. This design was inspired by the international influence that emerged as Jordan traveled the world promoting his brand and acting as a basketball ambassador. One of the signature elements of the Air Jordan 9 was its upper, which was made of a variety of materials, including suede and leather, which gave it a luxurious look. These shoes were also distinguished by the lack of the characteristic "Jumpman" logo on the heel, which was the first such case in the history of the Air Jordan line. Despite Michael Jordan's lack of presence on the court, the Air Jordan 9 found success as a basketball shoe as well as a streetwear staple.
